Fiber Construction Process

Discover the pioneering process of how we deliver fast, ultra-reliable fiber internet.

Building and installing cutting-edge fiber internet is a complex process, but the result for you is simple: faster, more reliable internet. Come along as we explore the fiber construction journey, so you can see what goes into delivering this innovative internet service to your home.

How fiber optic internet works

Innovative technology that lets you explore
the online world at the speed of light.

Fiber internet delivers data directly to your home through a dedicated line, either above ground or underground. Using light pulses, it transmits massive amounts of data at incredible speeds—literally the speed of light—giving you a faster, more reliable connection for everything you need.

Planning and Field Surveys

The first step in bringing fiber internet to your area is designing the network. This process includes detailed planning and field surveys, where the engineers check utility poles to ensure they’re ready for fiber installation. This phase typically takes 3-6 months.

Pole Approvals and Permits

Next, engineers finalize the network plans and submit requests to the utility companies to attach fiber to their poles. The utility companies review the plans, estimate costs, and give the green light for any necessary adjustments. This step usually takes 1-3 months.

Preparing Utility Poles

Before fiber can be installed, some utility poles may need adjustments. This might include moving existing lines, replacing old poles, or adding new ones to ensure everything fits safely. This work is done by the utility company and can take 4-8 months, depending on the conditions.

Building the Fiber Network

Once the poles are ready, our crews get to work building the fiber network. This includes attaching fiber cables to poles and installing key equipment like network cabinets and terminals. This final stage takes about 3-6 months.

Connecting Your Home

About 60-90 days before service becomes available, you can choose your fiber internet plan and schedule your installation.

The process is quick and easy: our team connects a fiber-optic cable from a nearby terminal to your home or business. Depending on the location, the cable is either attached to utility poles or buried using a low-impact method. If your home is located off a private road (non-VDOT maintained road), then the timeline may take a little longer as it will require that All Points Broadband obtain private easements in order for us to bury the cable to your property. Once the cable is in place, our technicians install All Points Broadband equipment outside your building to get you connected.

In just 2-4 hours, you’ll be ready to enjoy blazing-fast fiber internet that works seamlessly for your needs!

Questions about fiber construction?

Yes, an All Points representative will call or text you when a technician is on the way to your house.

Fiber construction is a multi-step process that involves many parties and the time frame can vary depending on total miles and other external factors. For more information on our fiber construction process, visit this page.

We will contact you in advance of fiber being ready to install in your area. To see if your address is part of our build and register for notifications please visit our customer portal at signup.allpointsbroadband.com

1. Pre-Installation Survey
All Points Broadband will perform a pre-installation survey to ensure that we can bring fiber to your home with minimal disruption. You do not need to be home for the survey, as we will only need access to your yard and the exterior of your home. Shortly after the survey, you will notice Miss Utility marking your yard prior to the fiber drop.

2. Keeping Your Existing Phone Number
If you have signed up for phone service through All Points and would like to keep your existing phone number, please send us a recent copy of your phone bill to [email protected]. Transferring your existing phone number can take up to 10 days and we don’t want this to hold up your installation.

3. Initial Fiber Drop
During the initial fiber drop, our construction crew will bring our fiber from the outside of your home to connect your home to the All Points network. Because this will only occur on the exterior of the home and you do not need to be home during the initial drop.

4. Final Installation
Once our fiber is run to your home, one of our customer service representatives will reach out to schedule your in-home installation.  Someone over the age of 18 must be present for the entirety of the installation appointment. An All Points technician will enter your home to install our network equipment and hook up your service.
